All packaging is free of traditional plastics, and innovatively designed to eliminate the need for a shipper box, and their box is fully recyclable and biodegradable. Lastly their products are developed to streamline your kitchen, and reduce the number of items you need to buy which means less items to throw into the landfill.

To help reduce single use plastic, Mepal offers a better for you line of storage containers with a variety of options. The most green friendly line is their glass easy clip storage boxes. Although they use plastic for the lid, the area where food is stored is composed of Borosilicate glass and has gone through a proper annealing process. They use 100 percent food grade materials and all products are tested externally to meet the strictest food safety requirements. The easy clip seals the box tightly allowing you to store leftovers in the fridge or freezer to help reduce food waste. The glass part of these storage containers are also oven safe and the entire product microwave and dishwasher safe, however, we personally advise against putting plastic in the microwave or dishwasher.
80 percent of line is manufactured in the Netherlands, saving over 2,500,000 kilos of CO2 per year and the plastic used is BPA free using EU guidelines for safety. 90 percent of their products are recyclable and 100 percent of their production waste is reused. Their goods are well made and built for durability to last for long term use. They also offer a parts replacement program in an effort to reduce waste from product even further. There is no need to throw an entire item away if a component gets damaged or lost, just simply order the piece you need. Their Headquartered in Lochem, Gelderland, is sustainably heated with solar panels and heat pumps. In 2024 Mepal will be certified as a B Corporation.

Still family owned and manufactured in Marcigny, a small town in the province of Burgundy, France, their wares are impecably crafted of Burgundy clay using their proprietary high resistance state-of-the-art oven ceramic manufacturing process. They stand behind their products with a 10 year warranty against breakage due to defective workmanship. Chefs hail them for their even distribution of heat. They are incredibly easy to clean and can go oven to freezer. We baked salmon in ours and the fish skin was easily cleaned off. We love the cork and cermaic storage for displaying beautiful fruit and root veggies. Their ovenware and bakeware exhibit extraordinary thermal shock properties. They can go under the broiler and are microwave and dishwasher safe. Most importantly, they are lead AND cadmium free. All of their glazes meet California Prop 65, and all of the products are 100% food safe. They are also PFOA, PFOS and PTFE free. It’s rare for me to come across a product I love and can’t live without. This is the case with Halo Covers. Halo Covers are dish covers created to help reduce single use plastic and aluminum foil waste. They are superb quality, made of 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and elastic. They are machine washable and microwave safe.
I discovered the brand while living in Toronto. After trying a number of other environmentally friendly solutions, including beeswax wraps, these are an ideal option for all leftovers, pre-cut fruits and veg and make ahead meals.
The only time they prove challenging to use is on overloaded bowls, where food is moist. For example, placed on an overflowing dish of spaghetti and meatballs, will not prove to be the best option. Even in this case they will work, simply cover with parchment paper first and then layer with the cover. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes with an adjustable elastic on the outer rim for ideal fit.
