The Long and Winding Road

The long and winding road of home ownership is peppered by detours more often than not. We hit two detours this past week! First… a wasp nest on the outside of our house! This nest had been burrowed deep enough into our siding, allowing for wasps to burrow their way in, and infiltrate our master bedroom! After day one of this catastrophe, I found myself very much identifying with that character from the Alfred Hitchcock movie, “The Birds”. And with the partial resolution of one problem, just around the corner came another. We discovered one of the rooms on the third floor has no heat! This happens to be in the room one of my children chose as their bedroom. Somehow we never noticed until after completed the painting of their room. With temperatures soaring into the 90’s just a few days ago, we never took notice as we painted for hours in the sweltering heat! However, looking on the bright side, there is a little sunshine to report after all this rain both literally and metaphorically speaking. Our first renovation is finally near complete. The floors have been replaced and sanded and they finished staining just hours ago. Everything about this project was done sustainably. We used North American White Oak to replace the damaged floors. Then, the floors were sanded and treated with Rubio Monocoat Raw Wood Cleaner followed by Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C stain which is zero voc and Green Guard Gold Certified. We chose the color Savannah. Its a medium brown which will hide darker markings and reduce the visibility of lighter markings. When perusing colors, be sure to select the species of wood you have or will have. This makes a huge difference in how the color will read. Super impressed by the quality! The color is rich and there was very little smell upon application. It is a single coat process due to its molecular bonding. I pretty much watched the whole process. It seemed relatively easy to apply. Had our floors not needed to be replaced, I feel we could have done the sanding and staining ourselves. I have taken time to read about other’s experiences with this product online and everybody raves about it! From the luster to the longevity, people claim it not only looks great, but stands the test of time. I echo the claims regarding the look. Will keep ypu updated on the wear. We are super pleased so far and can’t wait to complete the remaining unfinished rooms throughout the house. Follow along on instagram stories and reels as we continue our sustainable journey!
